◆How to say when you praise someone

That’s great! / That’s very impressive!
You look great!
Good job! / You did it! / Congratulations!
You really know a lot about 〜.
You’re good!
◆“That’s great!” is a common way to praise someone or something. A more polite way would be “That’s very impressive!”
If you’re talking with your family or a friend, you could say it in more casual ways.
--That’s amazing!
--That’s fantastic!
--That’s cool!
--That’s awesome!
◆Let’s try the following exercises.
Q: Your friend comes up to you and says he will go to a concert tonight. What would you say to him?
A: Oh, that’s great! I hope you have a great time!
Or you could say,
A: That’s awesome! How did you get the tickets?
Q: In the morning, a colleague enters the room. She is wearing a new jacket. What would you say to her?
A: Wow, you look great in your new outfit! Where did you get it?
Q: Your department director was selected as the “Manager of the Year.” What would you say?
A: Congratulations! It’s an honor working with you.
Q: You had a problem with your computer, but your colleague solved it right away. What would you say?
A: Thanks! You really know a lot about computers. Did you learn it by yourself?
Q: A man is playing the guitar on the street, and you like his music very much. What would you say to him?
A: You’re really good! Can you play us one more song?
◆When you get praised by someone, sometimes it makes you feel a little embarrassed. That makes you want to say “Oh, no. Please don’ say that.” But in English, it will be better to show appreciation.

--You’re so nice.
--You’re flattering me.
◆Let’s try the following exercises.
Q: A colleague comes up to you and says “I read your report you sent me the other day, and it was very impressive.” What would you say?
A: Thanks for your compliment. I’m relieved to hear that.
Q: Your friend says “You look great! Which barber shop did you go to?” What would you say?
A: You’re so nice. In fact, I did it myself.
Q: You are drawing a picture, and your friend looks at it. He says “You’re really good! Can you draw one for me?” What would you say?
A: You’re flattering me. Well, it’ll be 100 dollars!
